Past to Present

Brian Chidwick started contracting in 1960 with his first tractor, a Fordson E27N. Tractors were a fairly new commodity in the 60’s, and the fact that the Brian owned one meant he was in high demand as many farms were still using horses. At this time one of the main uses for the tractor was ploughing, which soon expanded to provide services such as reseeding, right through to the cutting and baling of the crop as hay.

Mechanisation of the business helped give it the edge and having a modern and well-maintained fleet, whether tractor or implement, has always been a priority. Initially, clients ranged from private landowners then developed to local authorities. We were then able to rapidly develop a wide spectrum of skills and increase the scope of services to meet the needs of different clients.

How We Work

The fundamentals of Chidwell as a company over the last 60 years of trading have not changed greatly, yet we have built a great wealth of knowledge and increased our loyal client base. We have embraced new technologies and modern practices, such as GPS guidance for field mapping and autosteer using RTK with pinpoint accuracy to within 2 cm.

This results in saving time for our clients, increasing fuel efficiency, and working towards reducing our carbon footprint.

We remain a family business serving clients ranging from corporate companies, local authorities and small holdings to schools, stables and farm estates. We value owning a modern up to date fleet where safety and reliability is paramount.

Regular maintenance schedules and service agreements ensure that the fleet is always ready to go to serve our customers both old and new. We cover Devon & parts of Somerset & Cornwall, so please do get in touch to discuss how we may best help you.
